Cannon Beach

If you need a long break (cause there are lots of stuff in this post and it took me a long time), get by your computer, grab a coke or a coffee, and let yourself be taken away with four grown giddy girls … who two weeks ago spent four days on the Oregon Coast […]

I know why your pictures look so good, Mary (and I’m not referring to textures.) But I keep wondering, why were all those critters in the tidepool the first evening but not there when I returned at another low tide? Were those arms or fins on those strange possibly-shrimp-or-fish creatures? And dang it, how does Linda Johnston look so good on a windy beach?

shayna - October 15, 2011 - 7:29 AM

Awesome post Mary. I crave visiting the Oregon Coast, thanks for giving me a taste of your time there ūüôā

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 15, 2011 - 7:40 AM

Seriously, one of the quaintest little towns, and prettiest beach around and while we didn’t go there this trip, Ecola Park (Beach) is just up the road and so amazing as well. Go to Cannon Beach in June as they have a Sand Castle Competition on the beach. Amazing work. Have a great weekend Shayna.

Roberta Johnston - October 15, 2011 - 8:01 AM

Do I have a favorite picture in the ones you posted??? Where would I start? the starfish, wow! the sand dollars, the “foam” that looked so pretty with all the colors of the rainbow? The cool car show? the bride and her friend, how cool was that??? But I guess my favorite? The pics of you and your cherished friends, after all isn’t that why you were there after all? Long time friends who see life in so many different ways but at the end of the day celebrate the Lord and His blessings in each of your lives all these years of friendship, too bad Oprah isn’t still on the air, she could do a whole show on your precious friendships and what you guys mean to each other! Thanks for posting Mary! I’m going to go back thru the photos again for the third time so I can really enjoy your trip again!

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 15, 2011 - 8:14 AM

Love it … looking at them three times! Woo hoo! If you knew how long I spent on this post and to hear you are looking at them three times – makes a blogger feel reeal good. ūüôā You are so sweet Roberta and so right about the friendships. It sometimes takes effort to keep us all together, but together we are. Have a great weekend. Mary

Linda Johnston - October 15, 2011 - 2:12 PM

Mary, you do the most amazing work preserving the loveliest memories of your family, friends and others. The beach outside our door with beauty so stunning it takes your breath away, the sea creatures in such abundance as I’ve never seen before, spending time with incredible friends and our awesome God, and a little shopping–does make for a perfect weekend getaway. It was so much fun playing Stacy and Clinton to Cathy V–she has such a gentle, beautiful spirit and it was so special to see her eyes light up when she saw how beautiful she looked in clothes that fit her so well. Roberta is right about our precious friendships. I am truly and abundantly blessed by my beautiful friends–all of them, even the ones who didn’t make it this trip and who we missed. Your blog is always so insightful and the perfect complement to your pictures. Yes, Angie and I were rolling our eyes at you and Kathy G while you were in back talking about photography. We got the strangest sense that we were listening to you speak a foreign language. Are you sure you two were speaking English? Thanks Mary.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 15, 2011 - 8:15 PM

Like I always tell you Linda, it’s easy. Just increase the f stop unless of course you want a blurred effect then you lower the shutter speed … but when you have a bright background, be sure to add a little extra touch of exposure but not too much because you’ll get hot spots on your histogram or you could bump up the ISO so that you can control your DOF. As always, thanks for sharing your heart and reminding the others that we missed them. The crazy part, next year will be totally different with new sights and new experiences for those who can make it.

Liz - October 15, 2011 - 9:25 PM

Mary your pictures are amazing (as usual)!! Thank you for sharing.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 16, 2011 - 6:57 AM

Liz, thank you! So nice to look on and see a comment from you!

Megan - October 16, 2011 - 10:27 AM

Whoa! I didn’t know starfish and sand dollars came in those colors! How gorgeous!! I love how the seal was posing and can’t believe you were all so brave to get so close! Better than all the scenery photos was all the random photos of you six silly girls smiling and having so much fun together…it makes me happy that you have such a tight knit group of girls to bond with!

Oh, and I agree with you- haystack rock looks amazingly different in each photo.

Love you!

Sheila Webb Clark - October 17, 2011 - 7:53 AM

Love this post Mary. Such great photos and looks like you had a great time!

Kathy Jones - October 17, 2011 - 4:44 PM

Mary – as always – amazing pics! Now I wish I had been there with all of you – you looked like you had a great time – and the scenery was even more stunning than last year!

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 18, 2011 - 8:17 AM

The sights were definitely a bonus this year and we didn’t even get over to Ecola Park. Wondered what we’d have seen there? Whales perhaps since Linda saw some when she was on the Oregon Coast earlier. Who knows. I won’t be able to go next year (I committed to shooting Gloria’s son’s wedding and the two collide, but you can go in my place and take the pictures, ok? OK! Thanks Kathy!)

Beth - The Botut Blog - October 18, 2011 - 11:04 AM

Wow, so beautiful and more than I expected. We just may have to add this spot to our “places to travel” list!

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 18, 2011 - 11:06 AM

Hi Beth, if you make it far enough to go to this beach, you better darn well make it all the way to Idaho! Just sayin’!

Your Man - October 18, 2011 - 8:15 PM

WOW, and you call yourself an amateur. What great pics with great friends. Love ya.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 18, 2011 - 8:25 PM

I know, I never cease to amaze you, do I Honey? (Wink)

Milt and Maxine – Home on the Range

Milt and Maxine just recently celebrated sixty years. 60. As in a six + a zero. As in 1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 20, 40, 60 years of marriage! As in a long time! Wow, seriously people, how many couples do you know that have been married 60 years? I’ve been fortunate to know a […]

OH Mary! These are awesome pictures of the folks! You captured them so well, love all the places you took their pictures, you certainly have an eye for detail and we will forever be in your debt for taking these of Milt and Max! Loved the story line too, so sweet. Thank you for taking the time to make a memory for the kids and grandkids and greats too. Love you!

jennessjohnston2 - August 30, 2011 - 7:23 PM

Mary,
Tears were in my eyes with the first picture. Many dear memories have been made at Grandma and Grandpa Grapes (as Lily calls him) place and with my wonderful Grandparents. The picture are beautiful!!!! Thanks for capturing all the stories and love.

lsj4157 - August 30, 2011 - 8:18 PM

Mary, thank you, thank you, thank you to you and to your able assistant Mikey. They turned out so well. It just wouldn’t have been right to have their photos done in a studio. This was perfect and, as always, you ROCK!!! Your blog really captured their personalities and the pictures captured their spirits. They were such troopers and did everything you asked and I’m so glad we have some beautiful photos to commemorate their sixty years together. What a blessing to our family.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - August 30, 2011 - 8:49 PM

All right you three, you made my day! I was in the grocery store when Mike called so when I hung up I checked my messages and got yours Roberta. Have to say I got a little (tiny bit) misty-eyed. Then later Jenness, then Linda. I’m touched knowing you are touched. You have a legacy up on “the mountain” and it’s nice to have memories — I know that more than anyone. Of course, you already have the memories, but you know what I mean. I really, really enjoyed myself so there you go. I’ve even gotten over the fact that the sun came out as soon as M & M walked into the house! And hey, anybody with the signa M & M have to be some pretty great people, right!

Roberta Johnston - August 31, 2011 - 7:32 PM

Mary,
I hope you have facebook and can read all the wonderful responses to the pictures you took of the folks! Everyone is so impressed with your work, your blog and your wit! The Lord has truly blessed you with your talent and you are blessing so many others in the process, thank you again sweetie!

Kathy Bettger - August 31, 2011 - 8:14 PM

Again, on top of things, Mary. Wow! These are great. I came in through the FB route, so the news is circulating there. You have touched more lives with your beautiful stories & pix. Keep it up.

Kathy

Laura Higgs - September 2, 2011 - 12:47 AM

beautiful. May we all be so blessed.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - September 5, 2011 - 2:53 PM

Just got home from camping to see your sweet note. I am so grateful for you and Linda who have both told me FB is getting the comments. That is so cool and I am happy for Milt and Maxine because it reflects back to them. They were awesome! I do not have FB (can you believe someone on the planet does NOT have it!) so Linda said she would track some comments for me. How fun! Thank you again Roberta for reading and commenting. It has certainly meant something to me.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - September 5, 2011 - 2:56 PM

Seriously, how cool is that! Thank you Kathy for letting me know. Andy and Lauren and Milt and Maxine have created some nice hits to my blog which is always fun to see. I know it is the people that the blog is about that is creating the stir and not me, but fun for me to see people enjoy it.

Fun Time Summer Time With the Ones I Love

I am having a blast this summer with my grandbabies! And in case you¬†were wondering …¬†no, I don’t always¬†have a camera in their space or face (gol, what do you think I am — obsessive or something? Do not answer that)¬†… but¬†I figure since¬†they are oblivious to¬†it most of the time, why shouldn’t I¬†get these […]

I’m not even sure where to start…I had such a delightful time reading this, crying some, laughing others and completely having my heart overwhelmed with love, joy and delight. You captured their personalities in the sweetest of ways, and I loved seeing all of the pictures that I’ve seen you snap, but haven’t SEEN. I’m not even going to start in on favorites, because there were too many- but I did love how you captured her coming out of the water when Robby dunked her.

Thanks for all you do- the snapshots, editing, bubbles, sleepovers, 2-kid putdowns, clothes and more. You spoil us all. Love you!

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - August 15, 2011 - 11:26 AM

Thanks for your sweet comments Meg. I had such fun pouring over all my pics seeing which ones would make the blog cut. It got a bit long (ya think?!). MOM XXO

Your Man - August 15, 2011 - 5:34 PM

Wow, I think I’m even becoming more of a softy than I thought. What great pics and moments that will never be forgotten. You are the greatest!!!!! Love

Megan - August 17, 2011 - 6:11 AM

Oops…forgot to mention how much I loved the Grampa/Sydney bubbly dialogue. PERFECTLY put!

Aubrey Archuleta - August 19, 2011 - 8:42 AM

So great, I just l.o.v.e.d. every bit of this post! Thanks for such a fun perspective on summa time with toddlers. Love the boobies comment & the bubble story, so entertaining, as we have all been there!

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - August 19, 2011 - 9:02 AM

Thank you Aubrey, I realize it was long so happy that you actually took the time to read the darn thing! It just kept growing and growing and you know how many pictures were “left behind” for me to wonder what to do with. My camera is a magnet to these kids.

Ali C - August 19, 2011 - 11:57 AM

Thanks for your kind words on my blog! Those are some seriously adorable grandbabies you have there! You can see your love in every image!

Nature's Lucky Moments?

Sometimes you are just at the right place at the right time — you know what I mean? I was visiting some family and was just leaving when this butterfly appeared in her flower garden. I’ll give you three guesses what I¬†had in my car? What! You guessed the first time … seriously, you guys […]

I found your site but don’t know how, I would have to hit the back button a bunch. But I really enjoyed it. Beautiful pictures and agree with you on the pictures that are just being right time and place. Some of my favorite of mine lately was with a point and shoot but had beautiful morning light. Enjoyed your wedding pictures and got a few ideas for decorating for an upcoming shower.

I think luck favors those who are talented, diligent, and tuned in to the whispers of God. You are one lucky gal.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - August 9, 2011 - 4:36 PM

Seriously that was so sweet. When those days happen that I feel like I should hang up my camera, I am going back to this comment! Love you for it. Well, I loved you already as my friend, but you get the idea. ūüôā

Tara - August 10, 2011 - 7:37 PM

I LOVE that butterfly and hummingbird shots! They are awesome! I love macro!

thanks so much for the comment on my blog! It really touched me! And it is always inspiring to hear people struggling to have babies, and know that they got their happy ending. It helps me relax a little ūüôā

Family Portraits | Cottonwood

The thing I love about going to Cottonwood¬†is the hospitality¬†and how we are always¬†made to feel at home and have access to anything we need (like a box of 175 individually wrapped York Patties that were extremely less in numbers by the time I left). The second thing I love is all the photos on […]

Happy 4th!

Happy Independence Day to all Americans out there! We were camping so I bought little shirts and flags for our grandbabies, now 18 months and 20 months, to celebrate on Sunday night. The sparklers got the kabash since I was thinking more of a photo shoot than forest fires and hefty fines, but luckily my […]

I Heart Faces Photo Challenge | Whimsical

Visit http://www.iheartfaces.com/ to see more photos of whimsy. One of Webster’s descriptions is “acting or behaving in a capricious manner” and if you don’t know what capricious is (cause I didn’t), it’s “given to sudden and unaccountable changes of mood or behavior.” We were invited to a “Hoe Down” this weekend and this little guy’s […]
