Cannon Beach

If you need a long break (cause there are lots of stuff in this post and it took me a long time), get by your computer, grab a coke or a coffee, and let yourself be taken away with four grown giddy girls … who two weeks ago spent four days on the Oregon Coast […]

I know why your pictures look so good, Mary (and I’m not referring to textures.) But I keep wondering, why were all those critters in the tidepool the first evening but not there when I returned at another low tide? Were those arms or fins on those strange possibly-shrimp-or-fish creatures? And dang it, how does Linda Johnston look so good on a windy beach?

shayna - October 15, 2011 - 7:29 AM

Awesome post Mary. I crave visiting the Oregon Coast, thanks for giving me a taste of your time there 🙂

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 15, 2011 - 7:40 AM

Seriously, one of the quaintest little towns, and prettiest beach around and while we didn’t go there this trip, Ecola Park (Beach) is just up the road and so amazing as well. Go to Cannon Beach in June as they have a Sand Castle Competition on the beach. Amazing work. Have a great weekend Shayna.

Roberta Johnston - October 15, 2011 - 8:01 AM

Do I have a favorite picture in the ones you posted??? Where would I start? the starfish, wow! the sand dollars, the “foam” that looked so pretty with all the colors of the rainbow? The cool car show? the bride and her friend, how cool was that??? But I guess my favorite? The pics of you and your cherished friends, after all isn’t that why you were there after all? Long time friends who see life in so many different ways but at the end of the day celebrate the Lord and His blessings in each of your lives all these years of friendship, too bad Oprah isn’t still on the air, she could do a whole show on your precious friendships and what you guys mean to each other! Thanks for posting Mary! I’m going to go back thru the photos again for the third time so I can really enjoy your trip again!

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 15, 2011 - 8:14 AM

Love it … looking at them three times! Woo hoo! If you knew how long I spent on this post and to hear you are looking at them three times – makes a blogger feel reeal good. 🙂 You are so sweet Roberta and so right about the friendships. It sometimes takes effort to keep us all together, but together we are. Have a great weekend. Mary

Linda Johnston - October 15, 2011 - 2:12 PM

Mary, you do the most amazing work preserving the loveliest memories of your family, friends and others. The beach outside our door with beauty so stunning it takes your breath away, the sea creatures in such abundance as I’ve never seen before, spending time with incredible friends and our awesome God, and a little shopping–does make for a perfect weekend getaway. It was so much fun playing Stacy and Clinton to Cathy V–she has such a gentle, beautiful spirit and it was so special to see her eyes light up when she saw how beautiful she looked in clothes that fit her so well. Roberta is right about our precious friendships. I am truly and abundantly blessed by my beautiful friends–all of them, even the ones who didn’t make it this trip and who we missed. Your blog is always so insightful and the perfect complement to your pictures. Yes, Angie and I were rolling our eyes at you and Kathy G while you were in back talking about photography. We got the strangest sense that we were listening to you speak a foreign language. Are you sure you two were speaking English? Thanks Mary.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 15, 2011 - 8:15 PM

Like I always tell you Linda, it’s easy. Just increase the f stop unless of course you want a blurred effect then you lower the shutter speed … but when you have a bright background, be sure to add a little extra touch of exposure but not too much because you’ll get hot spots on your histogram or you could bump up the ISO so that you can control your DOF. As always, thanks for sharing your heart and reminding the others that we missed them. The crazy part, next year will be totally different with new sights and new experiences for those who can make it.

Liz - October 15, 2011 - 9:25 PM

Mary your pictures are amazing (as usual)!! Thank you for sharing.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 16, 2011 - 6:57 AM

Liz, thank you! So nice to look on and see a comment from you!

Megan - October 16, 2011 - 10:27 AM

Whoa! I didn’t know starfish and sand dollars came in those colors! How gorgeous!! I love how the seal was posing and can’t believe you were all so brave to get so close! Better than all the scenery photos was all the random photos of you six silly girls smiling and having so much fun together…it makes me happy that you have such a tight knit group of girls to bond with!

Oh, and I agree with you- haystack rock looks amazingly different in each photo.

Love you!

Sheila Webb Clark - October 17, 2011 - 7:53 AM

Love this post Mary. Such great photos and looks like you had a great time!

Kathy Jones - October 17, 2011 - 4:44 PM

Mary – as always – amazing pics! Now I wish I had been there with all of you – you looked like you had a great time – and the scenery was even more stunning than last year!

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 18, 2011 - 8:17 AM

The sights were definitely a bonus this year and we didn’t even get over to Ecola Park. Wondered what we’d have seen there? Whales perhaps since Linda saw some when she was on the Oregon Coast earlier. Who knows. I won’t be able to go next year (I committed to shooting Gloria’s son’s wedding and the two collide, but you can go in my place and take the pictures, ok? OK! Thanks Kathy!)

Beth - The Botut Blog - October 18, 2011 - 11:04 AM

Wow, so beautiful and more than I expected. We just may have to add this spot to our “places to travel” list!

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 18, 2011 - 11:06 AM

Hi Beth, if you make it far enough to go to this beach, you better darn well make it all the way to Idaho! Just sayin’!

Your Man - October 18, 2011 - 8:15 PM

WOW, and you call yourself an amateur. What great pics with great friends. Love ya.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 18, 2011 - 8:25 PM

I know, I never cease to amaze you, do I Honey? (Wink)

Hunter's Weekend – Labor Day

We went camping over Labor Day with the kids and some good friends (missed you J’s). September 1st is opening Grouse Season (and my husband’s birthday every year) so up the mountain we went. It was a chilly 24 degrees that first morning at 6:30 am, but by the time we reached the summit around […]

My only complaint about these pictures…..Mike should have been wearing a Boise State hat! It comes in Orange too and would work for hunting! Other than that….breathtaking! Mary you need to be putting some of these in the Idaho Outdoors photo contest, but then again if you did, you’d be going up against some really good photographers like my son, Beau! haha, no really Mary, your photos of Idaho are stunning and are worthy of winning a contest, I am so glad you have that eye that can see what those of us miss, in this crazy, busy world, you help us to stop and “smell the roses” or at least stop, if only for a moment, and see what the Lord has created!! You have my Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval…..

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - September 7, 2011 - 6:10 AM

Oh, that’s funny about the hat Roberta. You are absolutely right! I took one photo that I will now need to add of Mike and Jim sporting their man aprons. Mike’s is BSU! I didn’t know Beau did this too — how cool — and yes, I intended to enter that contest and it sat by my desk and I never did it and was then mad at myself. Next year I promise to not let my lack of confidence get the best of me. Thank you for encouraging me as always.

Megan - September 7, 2011 - 6:25 AM

That second picture has Western Idaho Fair “Best of Show” written all over it. 🙂 Fun but COLD weekend. Oh, and thanks…really, thanks for the mouth-open sleeping picture. Guess it could have been worse, right? And it was such a lovely nap….

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - September 7, 2011 - 6:38 AM

Hee hee hee! I remember a much less flattering sleeping pic that showed up on you blog once of me. You know what they say about paybacks don’t you? So glad you guys came!!! Love you.

Thanks for adding the last photo and the commentary about Georgia! Now your Labor Day weekend pictures are complete!! (:

Aubrey - September 7, 2011 - 6:27 PM

WOW WOW WOW!!!! Those pics are STUNNING. I am so impressed. Looks like fun, wish I could have camping-crashed your group 😀

Your Man - September 7, 2011 - 7:47 PM

It was a great time. The weather friends and family all made it perfect. Great pics babe. Next time hand me the camera to get a pic of you with our grandkids. Love you after 36.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - September 7, 2011 - 11:04 PM

Aubrey, seriously, thank you! As for crashing the party … any ol’ time! Your boys would have a blast!

Beth - The Botut Blog - September 9, 2011 - 2:52 PM

OH MY GOSH! Just when I think I have found a favorite post you do something like this and make me re-think my favorite!! I love ALL the photos and cracked up at the “Born a golden retriever, shaved a lab.” Although, I must say I’d have to kill you for posting a picture of me sleeping. Why? Because I don’t sleep pretty like Megan does. I’d be all open mouth and drooling!

Awesome stuff Mary!

Cathie Alonzo - September 9, 2011 - 7:24 PM

Cousin Mary, you have definitely found your calling! Your are always just amazing!! Thanks for sharing.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - September 9, 2011 - 9:35 PM

Love all these Mary! All the landscape photos for soooo beautiful!

Nature's Lucky Moments?

Sometimes you are just at the right place at the right time — you know what I mean? I was visiting some family and was just leaving when this butterfly appeared in her flower garden. I’ll give you three guesses what I had in my car? What! You guessed the first time … seriously, you guys […]

I found your site but don’t know how, I would have to hit the back button a bunch. But I really enjoyed it. Beautiful pictures and agree with you on the pictures that are just being right time and place. Some of my favorite of mine lately was with a point and shoot but had beautiful morning light. Enjoyed your wedding pictures and got a few ideas for decorating for an upcoming shower.

Cathie Alonzo - August 8, 2011 - 10:53 PM

Wow!!

Beth - The Botut Blog - August 9, 2011 - 9:12 AM

It sounds as if that thunder storm was your alarm clock and that beautiful rainbow was waiting. You’re right, God does always have a plan.

Opening my ears and eyes,
Beth

Kathy Grover - August 9, 2011 - 1:00 PM

I think luck favors those who are talented, diligent, and tuned in to the whispers of God. You are one lucky gal.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - August 9, 2011 - 4:36 PM

Seriously that was so sweet. When those days happen that I feel like I should hang up my camera, I am going back to this comment! Love you for it. Well, I loved you already as my friend, but you get the idea. 🙂

Tara - August 10, 2011 - 7:37 PM

I LOVE that butterfly and hummingbird shots! They are awesome! I love macro!

thanks so much for the comment on my blog! It really touched me! And it is always inspiring to hear people struggling to have babies, and know that they got their happy ending. It helps me relax a little 🙂

Happy 4th!

Happy Independence Day to all Americans out there! We were camping so I bought little shirts and flags for our grandbabies, now 18 months and 20 months, to celebrate on Sunday night. The sparklers got the kabash since I was thinking more of a photo shoot than forest fires and hefty fines, but luckily my […]

Hoedown!

My husband is lucky enough to have a really cool cousin that throws some really cool parties so that other cool cousins and friends can come! This was their 2nd Annual Hoedown and while I thought I might leave my camera alone and just take in the party, I soon realized I couldn’t possibly miss […]

Mary I look at your web page several times a week. And your pictures are awesome. I cannot say which one I like better because they are so unique. You have a great talent and each day it is getting better and better. Keep up the good work. (But my favorites are of your grandbabies)

I Heart Faces Photo Challenge | Whimsical

Visit http://www.iheartfaces.com/ to see more photos of whimsy. One of Webster’s descriptions is “acting or behaving in a capricious manner” and if you don’t know what capricious is (cause I didn’t), it’s “given to sudden and unaccountable changes of mood or behavior.” We were invited to a “Hoe Down” this weekend and this little guy’s […]

Love the Photo. And I know what your talking about how ones mood can change with a horse around. I had a horse when I was growing up and my mood was very different when I was around my horse. I love the lightness of your photo and the expression of boy melts my heart.

Dreaming Hollow Photography - June 28, 2011 - 7:59 AM

This is such a beautiful image….love the light, the little boy and the mood of a beautiful sunny summers day! Sorry you are having trouble using your textures in PS Elements. You are welcome to e-mail me. I used to have elements (now have CS5) and know it can sometimes be a little tricky. Have a great day and hope you frame this lovely photo!

Ella at 9 Months

This is Ella and she is 9 months old! That’s 9 months of hugs and kisses, diaper changes, smiles, pouts, wrapping her daddy around her finger, learning to crawl, to stand up, putting everything in her mouth, getting two teeth, and to just be a joy to everyone around her. She is a C-U-T-I-E! I had […]

Camping Owies, Wa-Wa, Nammie, and Other Random Stuff

Camp trip #3 was relaxing, quiet, and scenic with intermittent chilly or perfect camping weather. We went to a new place we had scoped out years ago, and bingo, it was a hit. There were 45 camp spots in this campground, and for the first 24 hours Mike and I were the only two humans […]

Love that you put that last picture up- it was priceless. 🙂 A wonderful weekend, indeed- thanks again!!!

Matt, Danielle, and MJ

This little grandson of mine is now 19 months old so it was time for some new family portraits. Danielle wanted “old wood and tall grass” so I tried to deliver. The little fellow wasn’t so much into pictures as he was the rocks, glass, dirt, bugs, and anything else he shouldn’t have, so when we […]

Linda Johnston - June 7, 2011 - 9:31 AM

These pictures are awesome!! Of course it helps to have such photogenic subjects. What a beautiful little family. Now, Mary, lets see what you can do with my bunch of cutie patooties (be warned, the parents and grandparents will be a little more challenging). Can’t wait to see the Gerich’s cuteness.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - June 7, 2011 - 9:48 AM

Thank you Linda! I told Danielle I took too many pictures to which she said in an e-mail “I’m sorry we are such a cute family with such amazing talent… guess we should start charging people to take our pictures ;)” (News flash: I think I already DO pay to take their pictures … which you know I love, love, love and love to do.) Megan and Robby are next – this Thursday so I’ll post those next week after camping. As for your upcoming photo shoot, no worries. You could be blinking and noone will even notice with all of your cute grandkids in the picture. Oh wait! You WILL be blinking. We need to work on that.

Today is a good day. Smile. Mary
