Cannon Beach

If you need a long break (cause there are lots of stuff in this post and it took me a long time), get by your computer, grab a coke or a coffee, and let yourself be taken away with four grown giddy girls … who two weeks ago spent four days on the Oregon Coast […]

I know why your pictures look so good, Mary (and I’m not referring to textures.) But I keep wondering, why were all those critters in the tidepool the first evening but not there when I returned at another low tide? Were those arms or fins on those strange possibly-shrimp-or-fish creatures? And dang it, how does Linda Johnston look so good on a windy beach?

shayna - October 15, 2011 - 7:29 AM

Awesome post Mary. I crave visiting the Oregon Coast, thanks for giving me a taste of your time there 🙂

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 15, 2011 - 7:40 AM

Seriously, one of the quaintest little towns, and prettiest beach around and while we didn’t go there this trip, Ecola Park (Beach) is just up the road and so amazing as well. Go to Cannon Beach in June as they have a Sand Castle Competition on the beach. Amazing work. Have a great weekend Shayna.

Roberta Johnston - October 15, 2011 - 8:01 AM

Do I have a favorite picture in the ones you posted??? Where would I start? the starfish, wow! the sand dollars, the “foam” that looked so pretty with all the colors of the rainbow? The cool car show? the bride and her friend, how cool was that??? But I guess my favorite? The pics of you and your cherished friends, after all isn’t that why you were there after all? Long time friends who see life in so many different ways but at the end of the day celebrate the Lord and His blessings in each of your lives all these years of friendship, too bad Oprah isn’t still on the air, she could do a whole show on your precious friendships and what you guys mean to each other! Thanks for posting Mary! I’m going to go back thru the photos again for the third time so I can really enjoy your trip again!

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 15, 2011 - 8:14 AM

Love it … looking at them three times! Woo hoo! If you knew how long I spent on this post and to hear you are looking at them three times – makes a blogger feel reeal good. 🙂 You are so sweet Roberta and so right about the friendships. It sometimes takes effort to keep us all together, but together we are. Have a great weekend. Mary

Linda Johnston - October 15, 2011 - 2:12 PM

Mary, you do the most amazing work preserving the loveliest memories of your family, friends and others. The beach outside our door with beauty so stunning it takes your breath away, the sea creatures in such abundance as I’ve never seen before, spending time with incredible friends and our awesome God, and a little shopping–does make for a perfect weekend getaway. It was so much fun playing Stacy and Clinton to Cathy V–she has such a gentle, beautiful spirit and it was so special to see her eyes light up when she saw how beautiful she looked in clothes that fit her so well. Roberta is right about our precious friendships. I am truly and abundantly blessed by my beautiful friends–all of them, even the ones who didn’t make it this trip and who we missed. Your blog is always so insightful and the perfect complement to your pictures. Yes, Angie and I were rolling our eyes at you and Kathy G while you were in back talking about photography. We got the strangest sense that we were listening to you speak a foreign language. Are you sure you two were speaking English? Thanks Mary.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 15, 2011 - 8:15 PM

Like I always tell you Linda, it’s easy. Just increase the f stop unless of course you want a blurred effect then you lower the shutter speed … but when you have a bright background, be sure to add a little extra touch of exposure but not too much because you’ll get hot spots on your histogram or you could bump up the ISO so that you can control your DOF. As always, thanks for sharing your heart and reminding the others that we missed them. The crazy part, next year will be totally different with new sights and new experiences for those who can make it.

Liz - October 15, 2011 - 9:25 PM

Mary your pictures are amazing (as usual)!! Thank you for sharing.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 16, 2011 - 6:57 AM

Liz, thank you! So nice to look on and see a comment from you!

Megan - October 16, 2011 - 10:27 AM

Whoa! I didn’t know starfish and sand dollars came in those colors! How gorgeous!! I love how the seal was posing and can’t believe you were all so brave to get so close! Better than all the scenery photos was all the random photos of you six silly girls smiling and having so much fun together…it makes me happy that you have such a tight knit group of girls to bond with!

Oh, and I agree with you- haystack rock looks amazingly different in each photo.

Love you!

Sheila Webb Clark - October 17, 2011 - 7:53 AM

Love this post Mary. Such great photos and looks like you had a great time!

Kathy Jones - October 17, 2011 - 4:44 PM

Mary – as always – amazing pics! Now I wish I had been there with all of you – you looked like you had a great time – and the scenery was even more stunning than last year!

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 18, 2011 - 8:17 AM

The sights were definitely a bonus this year and we didn’t even get over to Ecola Park. Wondered what we’d have seen there? Whales perhaps since Linda saw some when she was on the Oregon Coast earlier. Who knows. I won’t be able to go next year (I committed to shooting Gloria’s son’s wedding and the two collide, but you can go in my place and take the pictures, ok? OK! Thanks Kathy!)

Beth - The Botut Blog - October 18, 2011 - 11:04 AM

Wow, so beautiful and more than I expected. We just may have to add this spot to our “places to travel” list!

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 18, 2011 - 11:06 AM

Hi Beth, if you make it far enough to go to this beach, you better darn well make it all the way to Idaho! Just sayin’!

Your Man - October 18, 2011 - 8:15 PM

WOW, and you call yourself an amateur. What great pics with great friends. Love ya.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - October 18, 2011 - 8:25 PM

I know, I never cease to amaze you, do I Honey? (Wink)

Nature's Lucky Moments?

Sometimes you are just at the right place at the right time — you know what I mean? I was visiting some family and was just leaving when this butterfly appeared in her flower garden. I’ll give you three guesses what I had in my car? What! You guessed the first time … seriously, you guys […]

I found your site but don’t know how, I would have to hit the back button a bunch. But I really enjoyed it. Beautiful pictures and agree with you on the pictures that are just being right time and place. Some of my favorite of mine lately was with a point and shoot but had beautiful morning light. Enjoyed your wedding pictures and got a few ideas for decorating for an upcoming shower.

Cathie Alonzo - August 8, 2011 - 10:53 PM

Wow!!

Beth - The Botut Blog - August 9, 2011 - 9:12 AM

It sounds as if that thunder storm was your alarm clock and that beautiful rainbow was waiting. You’re right, God does always have a plan.

Opening my ears and eyes,
Beth

Kathy Grover - August 9, 2011 - 1:00 PM

I think luck favors those who are talented, diligent, and tuned in to the whispers of God. You are one lucky gal.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - August 9, 2011 - 4:36 PM

Seriously that was so sweet. When those days happen that I feel like I should hang up my camera, I am going back to this comment! Love you for it. Well, I loved you already as my friend, but you get the idea. 🙂

Tara - August 10, 2011 - 7:37 PM

I LOVE that butterfly and hummingbird shots! They are awesome! I love macro!

thanks so much for the comment on my blog! It really touched me! And it is always inspiring to hear people struggling to have babies, and know that they got their happy ending. It helps me relax a little 🙂

Camping Owies, Wa-Wa, Nammie, and Other Random Stuff

Camp trip #3 was relaxing, quiet, and scenic with intermittent chilly or perfect camping weather. We went to a new place we had scoped out years ago, and bingo, it was a hit. There were 45 camp spots in this campground, and for the first 24 hours Mike and I were the only two humans […]

Botut (Beth) - June 14, 2011 - 11:48 PM

Looks beautiful and makes me [almost] forget about the lack of showers and caked on soot that accompanies our camping trips. i think your photos could inspire me to do just about anything including splashing with Sydney in glacial waters!
Beth

Megan - June 16, 2011 - 10:27 PM

Love that you put that last picture up- it was priceless. 🙂 A wonderful weekend, indeed- thanks again!!!

Glenns Ferry, Idaho

Our second camping trip of the year … ahhhh, I love camping. My hubs organizes the trip every May for our friends, this being our fourth — two at the Carmella RV Park and the last two years at Three Island Crossing. This year there were 12 of us. If you are looking to get […]

Great pictures Mary. I love how you work with the colors – and I loved the flower cart and how you overexposed it but kept the cart in full color! You will have to teach me some of your tricks on the computer!

Your Man - May 17, 2011 - 6:27 PM

I just love seeing all of our friends having a great time, That’s what’s it’s all about. Love ya all Mikey !

Linda - May 17, 2011 - 8:14 PM

I guess I don’t know why I’m always surprised by the beauty of your photos (except for the ones you have to take with me in them–sorry I’m such a poor subject). Beautiful memories–thanks for photographic chronicle of our time together.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - May 17, 2011 - 8:26 PM

You guys always lift me up with your comments. I am “trying” to stretch myself this last year and am feeling good about some of the payoffs. Yeh! As for you Linda – whatever!!! It was me and my shaky hand that left your photo behind. Kathy J. you can come over anytime you want for some “basic” computer editing lessons because I have much to learn about PhotoShop myself. It’s all a process.

Laura Higgs - May 18, 2011 - 6:14 PM

You should be entering your photos in contests if you are not already!

Diane - May 23, 2011 - 4:07 PM

Mary beautiful photo’s you are awesome. Very fun weekend thanks for the memories and laughs. And golfing was a BLAST!!!!!

Julie - May 24, 2011 - 8:17 AM

Wow! Mary you have such a great eye for pictures! I really like the train! Your photos are remarkable! Also, thank you all very much for including us in this awesome weekend getaway, we enjoyed it!

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - May 24, 2011 - 8:37 AM

Thank you Julie! I had so many pictures from that weekend and I appreciated you sharing which was your favorite. Sorry I missed saying goodbye … seems to be a pattern with me lately. We enjoyed your company and wish all good things for your daughter’s upcoming wedding.

Today is a good day. Smile. Mary

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - May 24, 2011 - 8:44 AM

I may have to get in on the golf game next year since I hear too much fun associated with it … or is it with the people who play it? Yea, that’s probably it.

Today is a good day. Smile. Mary

Sydney Reece and Co.

Megan, Robby, and 16 month old Sydney have been home for five weeks now and it has been crazy good! We have made up for lost time by doing lots of things together. Of course I usually have my camera in tow (except for this week when I got two big and two little visitors […]

Oh my sweet heavens. How can my heart melt so many times? I want to go wake her up just so I can squeeze that little cutie! I have been wondering where all those (amazing) pictures that I knew you took were…and here they are!!! Thank you! The one of you and her on the swings is perfect- your Grandma smile in that picture is priceless.

Btw- the watermark on the pics looks good!

Laura Higgs - May 13, 2011 - 12:05 AM

Love the pictures. Between Megan and your site, I am watching close from a far.
Your picture taking quality is extremely professional. Keep up the great work.

Your Man - May 15, 2011 - 2:58 PM

What a beautiful granddaughter I have. Not to mention wife and daughter. Yea , bet you were in my shoes.

Bye Bye Birdie

Last week I saw Bye Bye Birdie at the Morrison Center for Music Week, then you might recall that Mylah called my five baby chicks “Birdie” in the post called More Chicky Love. Well, birdies went bye-bye today. A nice couple with several acres and lots of chickens (who have a really nice neighbor that told me about […]

Well of course Mikey is looking forward to next year–he is probably already planning to put the stuff in the shed on his side of the garage! You know he loved those chickys.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - May 4, 2011 - 6:19 AM

I am thinking the same thing Linda. He is probably just waiting till next year when it will be a BIG EASTER SURPRISE like it was for him.

Laura Higgs - May 4, 2011 - 4:44 PM

Adorable. This story made me think that maybe when I was a kid, our family dog actually did go to “a farm.” :o)
I felt a sense you may upgrade to goats or llama next year…….

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - May 4, 2011 - 5:51 PM

Laura, you crack me up. Not sure my city covenants would go for the bigger animals, but put me on some acreage and I’m going for it!

botut - May 5, 2011 - 8:26 AM

Oh I love them! I am going to have Donnie build me a coop next year. He is thrilled (not).

Aubrey Archuleta - May 10, 2011 - 3:36 PM

Those pastel eggs! Beautiful. Maybe I will try my hand at chicks in Seattle?

Tulip Appreciation

This week our office put on their yearly “Staff Appreciation Event” which is always top-notch — lunch and entertainment for the whole office (while the office closes down). I work with some great people, in a great location downtown, and with a great schedule. I appreciate that. I really do. I took my camera to […]

Happy Easter Everyone!

Easter can be a lot of hype, just like Christmas … but the hype should and can be more than just the commercial type. Easter is a time of year that we remember Jesus dying on the cross, but we celebrate that three days later He rose from the dead! For Christians, eggs came to […]

Spring in Hells Canyon

We were out-of-town for our first camping trip of the year this past weekend … the first of many to come (and in the words of our good friend, Kathy … woohoo, woo hoo hoo!) We camped with three other couples and while at times it was cold, or windy, or rainy, there were other […]

What a great time with great friends. Love you all more than you know. Can’t wait till Carmela. Again what great pics. I mean it!

Diane - April 18, 2011 - 7:01 PM

It was a blast. Great pictures.

Megan - April 18, 2011 - 7:45 PM

All I have to say is you’re going to have a HELL of a time figuring out which picture(s) to post in the Western Idaho Fair this year…and I’m going to have a HELL of a time voting!!!

Kathy Grover - April 18, 2011 - 7:58 PM

Looking at these pictures is a bittersweet experience; emotionally difficult because we can’t be a part of this experience, but sweet for so many obvious reasons. I was shocked when I looked at all the pictures because I imagined that Hell’s Canyon was just rocks. I’m an Idaho native and yet never been to Hell’s Canyon, maybe the only place in Idaho I haven’t been. There is vegetation there! I had no idea. I thought you guys would be roughing it and literally parking on rocks, but look at that cushy RV park. How spoiled you are! It sure looks like the perfect time of year to be there. Thank you for sharing, it’s the next best thing to being there.

Linda - April 18, 2011 - 8:12 PM

It was a wonderful time with wonderful friends. The pictures are marvelous, of course. You really know how to capture the beauty of things we walk by without paying attention. I think I’m going to learn to stop and smell, or rather, “see” the roses way more often. By the way, Guy says those power poles look like money to him!! He thinks they are BEA-U-TI-FUL.

Linda - April 18, 2011 - 8:16 PM

So, Mary, where are the pictures of you and Mike? You should have one. I know that you were behind the lens usually, but there was at least one as I recall.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - April 18, 2011 - 9:10 PM

Awww, thanks Babe.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - April 18, 2011 - 9:16 PM

Kathy, there was so much new to me as well as this was only our second time there, and to the rest of you and your comments, thank you for encouraging me. I learned some new things about my camera this weekend and I loved that. There is always new things to learn. As for the pics of me and Mike, yes I had Kathy take one of us by the tree as well but it looked out of place with all you couples in your cute hats and sunglasses. I’m going shopping!

How to Entertain a 17 Month Old

We babysit this weekend and decided “an adventure” of some sort was in order. After breakfast we checked out the toy box to find the perfect adventure hat. He put the safari hat on and never took it off for hours. If it fell off, he put it back on. (Said 17 month old’s father better be […]

Linda Johnston - March 30, 2011 - 8:25 AM

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, I think you might get the “Maam Maw of the year award” for your photographic genius–the commentary is as good as the pictures. But I think I still get “Hon” of the year for my massive quantities of cooking for the grands and their parents. (No wonder I have ALWAYS struggled with my weight–I should take up photography.)

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - March 30, 2011 - 9:48 AM

Linda, you always make me smile and so thanks for the strokes! And to correct what you said about cooking … well, you don’t only feed kids and grandkids … you’ve pretty much fed just about everyone I know and then some! Thanks “Hon,” and hands down, you have the best grandma name ever! Today is a good day. Smile. Mary

Aubrey Archuleta - March 30, 2011 - 5:59 PM

My boys love the pet store too. I am okay with, except for the smell, oh man! It stinks!

Kathy Jones - March 30, 2011 - 6:24 PM

Well – after a long hard day at work it was good to come home and smile at your pictures! Thanks Mary, you made my day.

FairlyCandid.wordpress.com - March 30, 2011 - 7:37 PM

Nope, Pet Smart did not stink at all but I have been to some that have.
