Happy 7th Birthday Fairly Candid! I remember so clearly when I started this little photo blog 7 years ago in October because it was the month my oldest g-babe, MJ, was born. He turned 7 recently and there are now four other g-babes under him. I really don’t know what I was thinking starting a business in my mid 50’s, nor did I have a clue of what I was doing. Our daughter, Megan, was living in Hawaii at the time and she started a cute little blog called the Gerichs Ohana that kept us all informed of her and Robby’s life in paradise. It planted the seed and for month’s prior to take-off I took new photos of friends and family while I read and researched and Googled blog formats. I started off with a free website, then I eventually bought a .com, purchased a new website format after that, then spent what seemed like another few months getting it set up and looking like it does … which is old and tired and looking like it does. The passionate photographer inside me wants it updated and formatted completely different, but the realist in me knows I don’t have the time or the patience to spend another couple of months making it something different. Maybe I’ll have time after the fall photo season to spend the time learning, or after Christmas shopping, or after New’s Years and Syd’s 7th birthday to get it done, or when my 2016 photo album is finished … or, etc. etc. etc. Don’t anyone hold their breath because I’m certainly not going to. 🙁
On my Welcome page I have a little blip that says: “This blog, and the opportunity to photograph others, has stretched me and blessed me in ways too numerous to mention. Photography is my passion and I praise God I can share it with others.” That is still the truest statement I could say seven years later. I’ve learned more about people and business and photo skills than I knew was possible and I’m still learning. It hasn’t always been easy and I’ve had my share of anxiety about it, but I’m just a one-woman show who appreciates those who refer me to their friends and family. Hundreds of clients later, 474 blog posts, and a whole lot of humble pie along the way, I’m still in it, at least for this moment in time.
Thank you to my clients and family who support my passion, my readership, and the visitors along the way. I appreciate you all! Please leave a comment once in a while as I love hearing from you. And because this is a photo blog I’ll leave you with just a few pictures of the most important little people in my life. Love you all, Mary
MJ was fascinated with the Capitol Building this summer so we went to explore it. He said he wanted to ring the bell but I told him it didn’t work — and I honestly thought it didn’t and we left. But guess what? We learned it did, took another trip over Labor Day and you can tell by Sydney’s hands covering her ears that it does work! (What you don’t see are two helpful and skinny high school boys in the background (that I partially edited out) helping them push it so that it would ring.)
My King and Queen of art and crafts, MJ and Sydney, now first graders.
This is when you know two four-year olds (Jayden and Simone who is 3-weeks younger) have grown up with a camera in their face. We were at the zoo and I told them to go get in the hut so I could take their picture. This is how they went up and posed. Cracked me up.
And last up is little Cole who is 17 months and a little more shy with his smiles for me than he is for his mom. He comes over every other week so Megan can help in Sydney’s class and he just loves our playroom. His interest of late has been trucks and cars where normally it’s balls of any shape and size. Like his sister Simone, he is pretty good at entertaining himself and I just love observing his play.
