"Hoe Down"

Howdy Partner! Welcome to Cousin Jonette and Tony’s annual Hoe Down! Yee Haw and Cotton Eyed Joe. Okay, we’re not that Redneck, but we can kick up the dirt a little. If you missed last year’s, you can see my pictures here. It’s always fun at the Alonzo house, and this event always kicks it […]

What a great collage of pictures- makes me wish I were there! Looks like everyone enjoyed themselves, and I know they will all be excited to see your hard work with the pictures left over!

Cathie Alonzo - June 26, 2012 - 8:17 AM

Love these! Thanks Mary.

I was a tomboy growing up and my Grandpa Brown was a horse rancher. At times I got to break the ponies in the corral for perspective buyers. When we moved to Idaho in my early elementary years, we had contact with horses only by watching them at the Idaho Stampede Rodeo in Nampa. Us three girls (or […]

Love, love LOVE all the pictures in this post- and the memories they contain! How adorable to watch Sydney squeal with delight when the horses came…and equally adorable to watch you down in the dirt with her like a little kid reliving the memories. Later that night in bed I asked her what her favorite part was. She replied like this:

“The big horses. And the small horses. And the little one lay down and wrap up his toes and count one, six, seven and then he runnnnnnnnnns for his cage! And the horse bunked him off!”

Oh, and I love how you took your “junk” camera and got all those amazing bucking shots. Maybe it’s just you, not the camera? - June 11, 2012 - 1:47 PM

That’s cute what Syd said. I was counting to say how long before the horses came out, or how long it took to get them back in their corrals. She’s so dang cute … and it’s my “backup” camera … not my “junk” one silly.

Cathie Alonzo - June 11, 2012 - 4:17 PM

These rodeo action shots are just great! I love seeing Grandpa Mike on the roller coaster, too!

Aubrey - June 11, 2012 - 4:33 PM

Yes indeed, Grampa Mike on that roller coaster is So GREAT. Loved seeing the ones of you on the airplane, as well. What a fun family outing.

Kathy Grover - June 16, 2012 - 8:45 PM

Looking forward to this years Fair pix !

And the Winner Is …

I gave an opportunity to guess Simone’s birthdate, height, and weight on the post “The 9th Month – Megan” to win a half-price photo session. Here were the guesses: Megan – 8.3 and 21″ – Dang, that was a good guess but you had inside trader information and get free pictures anyway so you’re disqualified. […]

Laura Higgs - May 8, 2012 - 8:05 PM

I’m obsessively checking your blog to see updated pics of your newest family members :o)

You CAN teach an old dog new tricks!

As a photographer, there is always something new to learn and for me it was buckets worth at last Saturday’s Idaho Camera Workshop. The classes usually last one hour in length and vary from beginning photography basics like ISO, aperture, shutter speed, composition, to learning how to edit in RAW, to everything in between and beyond. You totally NEED that arm for the reflector. We’re not talking “want” here, we’re talking NEED. As far as a soft box, I have stumbled across some pretty awesome-looking DIY tutorials for making all kinds of photography stuff like soft boxes that look like they might be fun to try. I’m also thinking about your construction of your special grandkid room at your house and it makes me think that you could construct anything you wanted to. You are an inspiration to me.

Cindy - February 22, 2012 - 8:49 AM

When God touches your heart to go meet Diane in Rwanda I think you should teach a class to the Rwandans who photograph the sponsored children. I hate the “mug” shots they send to us every year. Often the children are staring straight at the camera. Yuck. - February 22, 2012 - 10:22 AM

I DID need that arm. You’ve seen me struggle with holding it myself on a photo shoot. And I already had the light stand to hold it so that was good. As for the rest of your comment about the light box … well, I’m not so sure about that.

Sent from my iPhone - February 22, 2012 - 10:24 AM

You’re going to keep working on me aren’t you Cindy?! Perhaps one day. 🙂

Aubrey - February 22, 2012 - 4:45 PM

I really enjoyed seeing the progression. You should play teacher more often. 😀

Boise State Proud

BSU – 35 TCU – 36 So sad! Mike and I had finally committed to going to a BCS bowl game should we have won and my mind was already racing ahead to all the cool pics I could take in New Orleans. But, it wasn’t meant to be. It’s okay though Broncos — we […]

Here we go Broncos, here we go!!! Love the pics Mary! It’s amazing how diverse our Bronco Nation is with their unique outfits! Even the “older” fans are into dressing up, young at heart huh? Win or lose, we love our orange and blue! Who knows, we still may get to a bowl game yet Mary, so keep saving your money, I know we are, hope to see you guys where ever we are headed….

Linda Johnston - November 16, 2011 - 10:12 PM

I LOVE the three ladies with their pompom pig tails and orange and blue hair!! The four with their mohawk hardhats were pretty fun too. Yes, we do still love our Broncos!! Poor Gooddale, hope he lets this turn him into a more determined young man. Disappointment is a big part of life. Thanks for showing your team spirit!! Are you SURE you weren’t a cheerleader? - November 16, 2011 - 10:21 PM

Are you asking ME if I was a cheerleader? Me? I could barely get away from the wall in high school, let alone be a cheerleader. I think I may have come out of my shell a bit, however, otherwise I don’t think I could walk up to complete strangers and ask “can I take your picture?” They always seem to let me. Hmmm, go figure. Raw! Raw! Go Team!

Linda Johnston - November 16, 2011 - 10:35 PM

I think you missed your calling. “Cheerleader” fits you perfectly! Though I know how you felt in high school. People thought I was shy–and I kinda was, unless, of course, they really knew me and then well. . .then they didn’t think I was shy. Nowadays, NOBODY ever says I’m shy and NOBODY would ever call you a wallflower!!

Beth - The Botut Blog - November 21, 2011 - 10:12 PM

Love the colors and the dyed beards!!! OMG, I’m going to totally make my hubs do that for some occasion….don’t know what yet but I will find one!!

Luv it.

Diana Aimee Umurungi

I promised you a blog about Cannon Beach … and trust me that is coming … but I wanted to share something more endearing first. About two years ago I made the commitment to do something I’ve never done before — sponsor a child from another country. You know that small inner voice that speaks […]

Oh Mary, what a wonderful blessing. I have always felt just like you described this situation – – I’ll bet letters are written by somebody else, there probablly isn’t even a real child by that name, it’s just made up for publicity. Your story just gave me chills and brought tears to my eyes. God bless you for listening to that still small voice.
With much love to you,
LoraLee and Lee - October 15, 2011 - 7:43 AM

You made me smile by actually reading it! On a photography blog, there’s supposed to be pictures, not so much text! No, there’s no rule that says that, I’m just kidding. Thank you Lora Lee, you always bless me with your comments. Have a great weekend. I’m heading off to the Pumpkin Patch with my daughter-in-law and grandson. You know what that means! … stay tuned! 🙂

Kathy Jones - October 21, 2011 - 5:25 AM

Very touching and inspiring! Keep doing what you do best! You are a great example of how God works through people. Love Kathy

My husband is lucky enough to have a really cool cousin that throws some really cool parties so that other cool cousins and friends can come! This was their 2nd Annual Hoedown and while I thought I might leave my camera alone and just take in the party, I soon realized I couldn’t possibly miss […]

Oh, I’m giggling to myself right now…that last picture is the best EVER. I can just hear your “Howdy Pardner” accent coming thru the screen.

Sheila Webb Clark - June 29, 2011 - 8:40 AM

Mary, when I need to smile, I just read your blog. Love the last photo!

Aubrey Archuleta - June 29, 2011 - 8:42 AM

Oh my! These are all so fun, made me want to be at that party. The one of you is priceless! LOVE LOVE LOVE.

Roberta Johnston - June 29, 2011 - 6:02 PM

Can I get in on the reward?? I think I know that person and maybe where to find her….(:

As always, Mary so wonderful, great job kiddo. - June 29, 2011 - 6:33 PM

What, you recognized me?! Dang, I should have done some Photo Shopping on me! Thanks for the kudos Roberta.

Diane - July 2, 2011 - 6:43 AM

Mary I look at your web page several times a week. And your pictures are awesome. I cannot say which one I like better because they are so unique. You have a great talent and each day it is getting better and better. Keep up the good work. (But my favorites are of your grandbabies)

Beth (The Botut Blog) - July 6, 2011 - 12:21 AM

Love me some of that country and that fire pit!! I also love the volley ball moves, horses and the smiles (even the horses!) haha

Bull Dog Tough

For 15 years the Mouser Family has been fortunate to rent a little house on the prairie owned by a cousin. We all fondly refer to the house as the “Ranch House” although we’re not really sure why that came to be. The house sits on an acre of property surrounded by endless miles of […]

Mary these pictures just keep getting better and better. I love this post. I’m coming for a visit – that’s how inspiried I am! And if you didn’t disclose your son’s soft side I’d think he was a “roughie” for sure! LOL
Beth - June 1, 2011 - 9:06 PM

I’ve got my calendar opened! I have a spare room! I have a part time job with lots of vacation built up! Now, when ya comin’. Roughie? Matt doesn’t care much for roughage. He’s a meat and potatoes kind of guy. Thanks for the strokes.

Aubrey Archuleta - June 3, 2011 - 9:32 AM

I agree, the pics just keep getting better. You blow me away, Mary! - June 3, 2011 - 4:35 PM

I luv hearing that. 😉

Memorial Day

On Saturday we went to the cemetery as we do each year. Even though we were there a day early it was already decorated as usual with all the big and small flags — striking in every way. I learned something new this year when my mom shared that the military used to contact my […]

Katie’s Bridal Shower

Our nephew Jacob is getting married to Katie in July. This past February I took some portraits of them and shared their love story (that you can read about here). With the wedding creeping up, it was “Shower Time!” The party was hosted by the Moulin gals and was great fun with few games, lots […]
