We went for the shows — not the Eclipse — but for the Starlight Theater shows “Beauty and the Beast” and “Guys and Dolls”. We booked months ahead, reserving three camp spots for Friday and Saturday nights … then it hit us that we were going to be in Crouch which was considered almost on […]

Bobbi Dodd - August 29, 2017 - 10:12 AM

Awesome pictures, Mary! What a wonderful experience for you.

I got to see 30 seconds of totality after hiking north of Bogus and I was awe inspired by that. I would definitely drive the distance to get longer in totality, if I got another chance.

I love the pictures with the colander – what a great idea!

Thanks for sharing!

Fairly Candid - August 30, 2017 - 7:12 AM

Hey Bobbi! So fun hearing from you! I’m glad to hear you are still hiking and I agree that some was better than none for the experience. There were some in Boise who seemed disappointed and waited for what they were seeing in the news but of course that didn’t happen. The coolest part was seeing the diamond ring at the very end of the blackout. Thank you for checking in. It gave me a nice memory of you that made me smile. Take care.

Apartment Life

You remember we sold our house and moved … to a temporary holding tank while we look for another place. Ask my hubby what he thinks of apartment life, and he’ll tell you he doesn’t like it, but ask me and I’ll tell you the truth — I love it! We have five full weeks under our belt […]

It is such a cute little apartment, and I’m REALLY glad you don’t have downstairs neighbors 😉 Cute pictures of the boys! They sure do love spending time with you!

Fairly Candid - January 17, 2014 - 9:51 PM

Thank you Danielle. That was music to my ears. 🙂

Roberta - January 18, 2014 - 9:24 AM

this post brings back memories for us! we loved our 4 months in our apt. amazingly 8 years ago this month. yours is so clean and put together! we looked like a furniture store since we didn’t want to store our antiques in the storage unit, we had all of them in our apt!! Shari’s daybed became our “couch”, Dining table, “guest suite” as we had tables on top of tables, etc. that year we took a small tree out of a very small box and tada, we were decorated, lol. we loved it too, the time we saved cleaning and mowing and doing yard work was spent together and with our family and friends. I won’t lie, not sure if I could do it long term, but for a season, it was truly wonderful….enjoy your time together, come look in Paramount for a new home, we love our neighborhood!

Linda - January 18, 2014 - 11:35 AM

Isn’t it fun how well that painting of the birch trees (that we spent what seemed like hours wandering around looking for, and a couple more testing that and at least one other on the wall above the fireplace in your old house because you liked the colors on the other one but the size and shape of this one) looks on that brown wall? It is absolutely perfect there! (P.S. How do you like that long, completely grammatically incorrect, run-on sentence?)

Fairly Candid - January 18, 2014 - 2:45 PM

I KNOW! God had this apartment in His plan long before I did. 🙂 And yes, that was quite the run on sentence!!

aubrey - January 19, 2014 - 1:39 PM

Loved this post. Love how you are embracing your season. And wowee! Your arms look amazing, I need to hit that gym with you!
And! You are right about that sweater. What a gem, glad you held onto it, Simone looks so cute in it.

Fairly Candid - January 19, 2014 - 1:45 PM

I have found that Photoshop is much easier than the gym! 🙂

Tracey - January 20, 2014 - 8:46 AM

NICE pictures! Glad you like apt. living. I hear it all isn’t that great of an experience but looks like you guys got in a great one. Enjoy.

Megan - January 20, 2014 - 8:57 AM

She IS a Grampa’s girl and I love it!!! That picture of MJ jumping over the dinosaur absolutely melts me…what a fun view!

Thanks again for babysitting, and for always being so willing to.

Also, I’m hoping that since I’m your daughter, I will look at least half as good as you do when I’m 60!

Fairly Candid - January 20, 2014 - 9:10 AM

Hey wait, I’m not 60 YET!

Diane - January 20, 2014 - 2:55 PM

You guys are acting like you are newly weds again. Love it!!!! Enjoy this time together.

Tyler - February 11, 2014 - 5:05 PM

Fairly Candid - February 11, 2014 - 6:32 PM

What a fun surprise to have you comment on my blog! That means a lot Tyler. Don’t forget to peek in on Valentine’s Day for some black and white and red all over. 🙂

Thank You!

Thank you! It was a great year for my little word-of-mouth Fairly Candid website. I photographed 50+ different individuals or families this year and am so grateful for all the wonderful returning clients as well as new ones met. I am especially grateful to those who shared my name with others. Word-of-mouth is the greatest compliment! I […]

Cannon Beach 2013

Aw, Cannon Beach, you know I love you. There were seven of us all together — two from Gig Harbor, WA, and the other five of us from Boise that got to go this past weekend — all of us friends for many years. There were four Kathy’s, two Mary’s and a “just Linda”. (We […]

Linda J. - October 8, 2013 - 10:47 AM

It was, as always, so beautiful and memorable. What an amazing setting for bonding with six delightful friends (four Kathy’s, the two Mary’s)and just me. I feel blessed that God orchestrated our time there by providing amazing weather, once again, (one of these years God is going to give us some bad weather while we are there just to see if He can get our attention in the wind and rain as well as the sunshine), laughter (even while driving in the same circle over and over), tears, sharing our joys and fears, worshipping Him, eating good food, shopping, and putting our trials into the correct perspective. Thanks, Mary, for cataloguing our beautiful trip.

Megan - October 8, 2013 - 1:52 PM

I’m not a lover of cold oceans and breezes, but seeing all the gorgeous pics of haystack and the fun little creatures on it during low tide make me want to revisit. Fun to see it all through your lens. So happy for the lovely group of friends you run with.

Mary Jones - October 8, 2013 - 4:33 PM

Hi Mary I was so surprised and happy to see you had already written your story at Cannon Beach. It was truly a delight to be with all of you. Time has made out friendships even stronger. Thanks for soooo many good memorizes and looking forward to next year. I hope we will stay in touch thru the year. Love to you and your family. Love Mary J

Kathie Bassick - October 8, 2013 - 6:20 PM

These are wonderful pictures, and great photography, you have a wonderful ability to catch the light and subject at the perfect time. Thank you so much for documenting our trip. It was fun in spite of my meltdown and pain thresh hold. I would love to have some copies of these photo’s when they are available.

Kathy G. - October 9, 2013 - 10:23 PM

Reading my email and discovering this tonight was the perfect way to end this day and just what I needed to see at this moment. Every one of these pictures captured more than what the eye can see, beyond the physical realm.

Kathy - October 15, 2013 - 9:28 PM

Lovely pics. Looks like I missed another good year.

This Home’s For Sale!

So how many blog posts do you ever see to sell a house? None for me, so I figured, why not since I took the pictures for the MLS listing anyway (does that mean I get to put commercial photographer on my resume now? Ha!). But even if you aren’t looking to buy, I thought […]

I love your bedspread and your backyard looks awesome!!!

Gloria - September 20, 2013 - 11:38 AM

What a beautiful home! In this case, the pictures do it justice very well! It’s easy to walk into your home and feel all the warmth. You guys take such care in making it a home anyone would be proud to own. Be prepared as you will have people fall in love with it and you will have to turn it over to another caring family. We wish you guys the best!!

Fairly Candid - September 20, 2013 - 11:48 AM

Thanks Gloria, you’re so good at encouragement!

LoraLee Carter - September 20, 2013 - 1:42 PM

“You’re crazy to sell that house!” Lee just said to tell you! It is absolutely beautiful! Now you can add Interior Decorator to your long list of talents. Are you thinking of a condo or town house? We wish you the best whatever you decide Honey, you two have done a beautiful job of everything you do, so more power to you!!!!- With much love.

Being Grateful » - November 28, 2013 - 1:08 AM

The hubs and I got out of town recently to a “hot spot” (divine high 80’s leaving behind low 50’s) where we had only been once in our lives — Las Vegas. Eight years ago, for our 30th wedding anniversary, our two kids — Megan then 23 and Matt 21 — saved money for over […]

We shall indeed!!!!!

Megan - April 22, 2013 - 9:26 PM

Such AWESOME pictures…feel like I don’t need to visit Vegas b/c I just did and feel like I need to visit just so I can see it all in person.

Fun to hear all the details about your trip. But…you didn’t get ONE pic of you or your man!?!? What’s up with that!!!???

Kathy G - April 23, 2013 - 5:58 PM

I know just where that chocolate fountain is, because having been in Vegas for the one and only time years ago, I was visually attracted to take pictures of the same kind of stuff. I think some of the best stuff in Vegas is free to look at and that includes the architecture. Next time you go, though, you are going to have to tell me first so I can have you bring me something. And what I’m thinking of you may already have.

Ho! Ho! Ho! – Santa and the Mrs.

I must have been a very good girl this year, because not only did I get to see Santa, I got to take his picture … and the Mrs. too! These are our good friends, Bob and Kathy Bassick — aka, Mr. and Mrs. Claus FOR HIRE. They have grandkids out of state so in order to […]

They are perfect – looking forward to their visit on LaMesita Way.

Linda - November 21, 2012 - 10:31 AM

I am still wondering when I got old enough to be friends with Mr. and Mrs. Claus–I remember them from MY childhood. Clearly they do not age at the same rate as we non-magical humans! Bob and Kathie, do I see a Christmas card photo of the kissing pose in our future? I hope so–that is my FAV!

Jenness Johnston - November 21, 2012 - 12:29 PM

Oh my goodness I love these!! They are perfect!!!

Fairly Candid - November 21, 2012 - 1:53 PM

What a cute CREATIVE comment Linda Sue! It was Kathy’s idea for the kiss for her grandkids. Too cute!

My Photographic Journey – The End?

Where to start? Perhaps I’ll just start at the end and cut to the chase by saying this is it — the end of my little photo blog here at It’s been a wonderful place to play these past (almost) two years and 190 posts later. I have enjoyed putting my thoughts and photos […]

Great picture of you. . .How did you do that one? Tripod? I’ll be following you wherever you go–but you probably knew that. - August 6, 2012 - 6:25 PM

I shot the staff at work for our Intranet page … just gave my camera to another photographer in the group after doing hers. I just got lucky that one turned out of me … with some “extreme” editing on my part of course. 😉

Lacey Borchardt - August 6, 2012 - 10:24 PM

Mary, I’m so excited and proud of you and your work!!! Can’t wait to do a newborn shoot with you! I already found 2 blankets he will be photographed with 🙂 Can not wait to see your new site! God Bless you!

Kathy Grover - August 7, 2012 - 12:17 AM

Wow, that picture of you just elicited a seriously big smile from me!

I’m sure I don’t have to remind you that no matter how “extreme” the editing, the picture won’t be great unless it’s great to begin with. Kudos to your fellow photographer and to you for being photogenic from the get go. - August 7, 2012 - 7:20 AM

Lacey, thank you! I was so excited when your mom told me you wanted me to photograph Maks. Can’t wait to meet that little guy next month. Sorry to have missed your shower and that growing belly and congrats on the house! So much excitement coming your way. 🙂 Love, Mary

Proud Mommy - August 7, 2012 - 8:57 AM

Yay Mom!!! I like to think of myself as one of your biggest cheerleaders…I’m so PROUD of you!!! You’ve come so far, broken out of so many comfort zones and are FINALLY realizing (and admitting) that you really do take amazing photos! I’m excited to watch you expand on your continued journey with Fairly Candid. I admire you!

Megan - August 7, 2012 - 8:59 AM

Oops…it’s not supposed to say Proud Mommy- that was from my last comment! More like Proud Daughter! - August 7, 2012 - 10:24 AM

YES, you have been one of my greatest cheerleaders from the very first day you heard about my new blog and sent me a congratulations card from Hawaii. Seriously, how sweet was that. I appreciate you Megan … and in response to your second comment, I’m the “proud mommy” now.

Kathy - August 9, 2012 - 1:02 AM

You GO girl! Can’t wait to see the new site!

The Big 3-0!

I was almost 28 when I had my daughter after trying for three years and being married for seven. Nothing could have burst my bubble — even having to wear maternity clothes for a month after she was born because I’d gained 40 pounds. It didn’t bother me. Even having to wear my mom’s clothes […]
