We went for the shows — not the Eclipse — but for the Starlight Theater shows “Beauty and the Beast” and “Guys and Dolls”. We booked months ahead, reserving three camp spots for Friday and Saturday nights … then it hit us that we were going to be in Crouch which was considered almost on […]

Bobbi Dodd - August 29, 2017 - 10:12 AM

Awesome pictures, Mary! What a wonderful experience for you.

I got to see 30 seconds of totality after hiking north of Bogus and I was awe inspired by that. I would definitely drive the distance to get longer in totality, if I got another chance.

I love the pictures with the colander – what a great idea!

Thanks for sharing!

Fairly Candid - August 30, 2017 - 7:12 AM

Hey Bobbi! So fun hearing from you! I’m glad to hear you are still hiking and I agree that some was better than none for the experience. There were some in Boise who seemed disappointed and waited for what they were seeing in the news but of course that didn’t happen. The coolest part was seeing the diamond ring at the very end of the blackout. Thank you for checking in. It gave me a nice memory of you that made me smile. Take care.

Cannon Beach 2016

Yawn (big stretch). You don’t remember me do you? It’s me, Mary … From Fairly Candid? Ha! Well, it’s no secret that I have taken a long break from the computer and my normal pace these past months since retirement and it feels good to have done so. I’ve been (slowly) working on projects and photos here […]

My friend (Mary) is an amazing… FRIEND, PHOTOGRAPHER, TALENT, PASSIONATE, SMART, SELFLESS, HARDWORKING, BEAUTIFUL in and out just to mention a few! Great job, great memories Mary! Loved the special captures of your travels. -Gloria

LInda - January 25, 2017 - 10:15 AM

It brings back wonderful memories of special times spent with incredible friends. Thanks for posting them Mary, they are terrific as always.

Becky Hamilton - January 25, 2017 - 10:26 PM

You have such a great eye for composition. I especially like the the boots and the door. Great job.

Kathy Grover - January 27, 2017 - 9:42 PM

I vote for the boots. No wait! The 3 Kathys, 2 Lindas and a Mary!

Fairly Candid - January 29, 2017 - 2:12 PM

Thank you everyone for chiming in. It’s always fun for me to read your comments, but as for you Gloria, I think you must have been thinking about one of your ‘other’ friends when you wrote your comment. No worries, you just make me want to do better. And to you Kathy and Linda, can’t wait till next year. In writing my post it made me think that perhaps we should branch out a bit and try new things? 🙂 Love you, Mary

Tracey - February 20, 2017 - 11:18 AM

Mary, I miss you so much. I’m glad to get to see your pictures. You are such a great photographer. Can’t wait to see more. Love to you and your Family.

2016 Fair Entry Winner

Three images were entered into this year’s Western Idaho Fair under the Professional Division and this was awarded a first place blue ribbon. It was entered under Animals: Winged Animals – Not Birds of Prey. Luckily for me, a client allowed me some time to capture it while out on a family session. I have the […]

When I saw this at the fair, I didn’t even need to see the ribbon to know it was a winner. You should post the other two as well.

Birds of a Feather

I promise this post to be short and sweet — nothing like the maniac last one. Each June we camp at Sugar Loaf in Cascade and I love it because of all the birds you’ll find there. On our last day there I took my normal walk, but this time with camera in hand. Birds of […]

Linda Johnston - July 15, 2016 - 9:12 AM

Those birds were absolutely spectacular! I just may have to get a print of the one preparing for landing, and of the one holding the feather and. . .I might need them all! It is very handy to have a great friend who takes such stunning pictures. Another perk of having Mary as a besty!

Fairly Candid - July 15, 2016 - 9:19 AM

I can definitely make that happen for you Linda. 🙂

Vince - July 16, 2016 - 7:31 AM

These are stunning. You absolutely should do and post more nature photography.

Megan - July 17, 2016 - 10:35 PM

Gorgeous! LOVED the first picture. And how crazy that they all had stuff in their mouths! Busy little birds!

Cannon Beach 2014

It’s March. I know. But as a photographer there is always something that gets pushed to the side burner while I edit client sessions, or family sessions, play with g-babes, work on my yearly photo book, do the normal obligatory chores, watch TV, eat, sleep, work at my real job, and then do it all again. […]

Linda J. - March 13, 2015 - 9:25 AM

Brings back memories so fond it creates longing to be there again right now. I know why you didn’t get to it until now, God was giving us all a gift five months later. That is a lovely picture of the Native American girl–I wasn’t with you for that one. Did you find her on the beach?

Fairly Candid - March 13, 2015 - 10:12 AM

Sweet note Linda. Perhaps you are right about the timing of the post, and yes, the Indian girl was down by Haystack Rock as the sun was setting. I asked permission to take her picture. Mary

Cannon Beach Seal - March 15, 2015 - 11:17 AM

OK, that one with the banana slug was just gross. He does not deserve to have his picture taken. Otherwise, nice job. I missed you guys again this year. I love to have my picture taken! Part of the problem with us seals and sea lions (and other marine life) is that global warming is messing with our habitat and food supply, making it hard for us to survive where we used to live. I might not be able to come back to Cannon Beach. But wherever I am, I will fondly think of all of you. Keep up the good work, Mary!

Mary - March 15, 2015 - 5:39 PM

Thank you KG! You are quite a sneaky little seal. For those reading that may not understand, one year we had an amazing seal on the beach that let everyone get close and take pictures.

Snowshoeing 101

We were invited to snowshoe into a yurt for a two-night stay by friends months ago. I was on board instantly while Mike was more realistic and contemplative about our ability to do it. No matter what, we were going! Eight of us took a hike to the yurt in October on dry ground to […]

Linda J. - January 29, 2015 - 9:58 AM

It was a lot of fun getting lots of exercise and hanging out with great friends. I, too, worried too much about our abilities. But it really did feel like a victory when we were standing on that deck after making it all the way and it wasn’t even THAT hard-nothing more than a good effort and sweat. Have you contacted the General Mills people yet, Mary?

Vince - January 29, 2015 - 2:56 PM

Great pictures! Now I have a good idea of what a yurt looks like. Good thing none of you are claustrophobic, though. You all look so happy — I’m glad you had a good time!

Diane - January 29, 2015 - 7:27 PM

Mary you did a great job capturing of snowshoe trip. It was so much fun and wonderful memories. I am so proud of our men they worked so hard getting all our stuff up the mountain. And ladies we did it. I was worried I would not make it. And I am ready to go again!!!! It was so beautiful in the mountains.

Jim - January 29, 2015 - 7:43 PM

Your photos bring back memories of an awesome weekend with great friends. Great times, great pictures only 1 problem, are time was too short, we’ll have to do that again. We were blessed with fantastic weather, good food & lots of laughter. We’re lucky to have a friend that’s as good a photographer as you are. Thanks for posting your adventure.

Dad - January 29, 2015 - 9:15 PM

What a great trip with great friends. It was an awesome experience to say the least. A special thanks to our friends for helping us to prepare for this adventure. An to our photographer {my babe} you always have a way of capturing the best pics. It was a weekend I”ll never forget. Looking forward to our next trip in a couple of months. Love ya all.

Cannon Beach 2013

Aw, Cannon Beach, you know I love you. There were seven of us all together — two from Gig Harbor, WA, and the other five of us from Boise that got to go this past weekend — all of us friends for many years. There were four Kathy’s, two Mary’s and a “just Linda”. (We […]

Linda J. - October 8, 2013 - 10:47 AM

It was, as always, so beautiful and memorable. What an amazing setting for bonding with six delightful friends (four Kathy’s, the two Mary’s)and just me. I feel blessed that God orchestrated our time there by providing amazing weather, once again, (one of these years God is going to give us some bad weather while we are there just to see if He can get our attention in the wind and rain as well as the sunshine), laughter (even while driving in the same circle over and over), tears, sharing our joys and fears, worshipping Him, eating good food, shopping, and putting our trials into the correct perspective. Thanks, Mary, for cataloguing our beautiful trip.

Megan - October 8, 2013 - 1:52 PM

I’m not a lover of cold oceans and breezes, but seeing all the gorgeous pics of haystack and the fun little creatures on it during low tide make me want to revisit. Fun to see it all through your lens. So happy for the lovely group of friends you run with.

Mary Jones - October 8, 2013 - 4:33 PM

Hi Mary I was so surprised and happy to see you had already written your story at Cannon Beach. It was truly a delight to be with all of you. Time has made out friendships even stronger. Thanks for soooo many good memorizes and looking forward to next year. I hope we will stay in touch thru the year. Love to you and your family. Love Mary J

Kathie Bassick - October 8, 2013 - 6:20 PM

These are wonderful pictures, and great photography, you have a wonderful ability to catch the light and subject at the perfect time. Thank you so much for documenting our trip. It was fun in spite of my meltdown and pain thresh hold. I would love to have some copies of these photo’s when they are available.

Kathy G. - October 9, 2013 - 10:23 PM

Reading my email and discovering this tonight was the perfect way to end this day and just what I needed to see at this moment. Every one of these pictures captured more than what the eye can see, beyond the physical realm.

Kathy - October 15, 2013 - 9:28 PM

Lovely pics. Looks like I missed another good year.

“Defining Summer” [July and August]

Ahh Summertime, you were so good to me. You provided some great moments — time for family, friends, camping, swimming pools, rivers, parades, playgrounds, hot weather, summer rain … and a messy house, weedy flower beds, and dirty cars! One thing about chores … they always seem to wait for you! G-Babes, they grow up […]

Love love love LOVE!! I’m going to have to redo this post 6 times just because I LOVE IT! My favorite was your fun descriptions of each kid, and all the words you chose to go with different pictures. So much fun and well put together. I’m not even going to think of a favorite- they were all so fun to look at and ‘relive’ the summer! Thanks so much for taking all of these!!!

Tracey - September 18, 2013 - 8:42 AM

Oh these pictures are GREAT! They really make you want to know the story behind them. The children are growing up so fast. I’m glad to see you all are enjoying every minute. Love to your family and God Bless you all!

Fairly Candid - September 18, 2013 - 8:54 AM

Thank you Tracy, and don’t worry, I can share a few stories at work and I agree, they are growing so fast. I look at pictures of just months ago, and say “what the heck! Stop growing!”

Gloria - September 18, 2013 - 9:10 AM

Loved the pictures, the adventures, and the special captures! Great job Mary!

Linda - September 18, 2013 - 9:30 AM

Oh my goodness!! Such sweet and funny pictures. I have to say it is a really good thing that Megan has such perfectly groomed eyebrows or that funny photo would revealed every out of place hair. . .unless, you were a good Mommy/photographer and removed them for her. Love them Mary, as usual.

Fairly Candid - September 18, 2013 - 9:34 AM

Aw, thank you Gloria!

Fairly Candid - September 18, 2013 - 9:36 AM

Oh that’s too funny Linda. Nope, they’re hers (although I did darken them for “dramatic effect” … you know how I love PS!)

Aubrey - September 18, 2013 - 12:41 PM

So much happiness in all these captures. Especially enjoyed seeing so many of you and the hubs 😀 What a fun season this summer was for you and yours!

Bobbi - September 18, 2013 - 12:46 PM

Awesome, Mary. Thanks so much for sharing and reminding me of the joys and great memories of summer. This posting can’t help but bring a smile 🙂

Fairly Candid - September 18, 2013 - 1:02 PM

Oh, thank you Bobbi, that comment touches me. You smile, I smile. 🙂

LoraLee Carter - September 18, 2013 - 2:31 PM

Mary, you are just unbelievable!!! Not only are you a wonderful photographer, but your talent for writing is as good or better!
What a great idea to combine favorite pictures over time and have a condensed collage with such entertaining commentaries!!!
I am “blown away” by your talents and so proud of you!!
What a treasure you are creating for your family. We love you sweet girl. Keep the pictures comin’, we LOVE seeing them!

Fairly Candid - September 18, 2013 - 9:51 PM

If I knew how to find my high school English teacher, I would sent him your note. I think I got a C-. Boy I’ll bet he’d be sorry now!

vickie - September 20, 2013 - 10:08 AM

Well Done! Mike and Mary you have done a wonderful job of raising your own kids and now they are in turn doing a wonderful job of raising theirs. What a beautiful family. Mary you did a great job of capturing love in a picture. Bless you all.

Diane D - September 23, 2013 - 7:03 PM

I loved looking at all your shots …. Mary you have that eye to see all the fun pictures.

My Little Piece of Heaven – Riggins

With this freezing inversion getting the best of me, I thought it was time to edit pictures taken last August of one of my favorite camping spots of all time — Riggins — where it is so unbearably hot that I have to wear cool wet scarves around my neck and point a battery-operated fan in […]

I love it. Can’t wait to go back this summer. Anybody else wanna go?

Matt - January 24, 2013 - 8:20 PM

Diane - January 25, 2013 - 7:03 AM

Beautiful pictures. I love the fruit on the tree pix’s. And of course the Hell’s Canyon shots are awesome. Good job!!!

Mary - January 25, 2013 - 8:34 AM

So which one did you pick for your wall

Linda J. - January 25, 2013 - 10:21 AM

I love these!! They bring back memories of fun times with amazing friends, hot days in the sun, the delicious experience of cooling off in the river, long walks while reveling in God’s handiwork (and one little broken toe). Ahh, is it August yet?

Kathy - January 26, 2013 - 9:28 AM

I am more than ready!!! Swimming in the river, melting in the hot sun, enjoying great friends, I am SO THERE!

Fairly Candid - January 28, 2013 - 9:14 AM

You mean the Salmon River … but they do look an awful lot alike in spots. You probably just had wishful thinking that you were back in Hells Canyon again. 🙂

Fairly Candid - January 28, 2013 - 9:16 AM

Boy oh boy my boy has a sense of humor. NOT (going to happen). 😉 Love, Mom

Day 19: Light

32 Day Photo Challenge: Day 19: Light. Light is the major component of a photograph. If you don’t have any light, you don’t have a picture! A light source can come from anywhere … ambient light from the sun or moon, from street lights, candlelight, a cell phone, the oven with the door open … […]

Stunning, Mom!

Linda J. - December 19, 2012 - 10:59 AM

Wow, that is a BEAUTIFUL photo. I drive by it every night on my way to the gym and it is a stunning scene. I’m surprised there haven’t been accidents in front of it from all the folks taking their eyes off the road to experience it.

Bobbi - December 19, 2012 - 2:12 PM

This was truly Awesome, Mary!

your Man - December 19, 2012 - 4:23 PM

Who needs light. You light up my world babe!

Fairly Candid - December 19, 2012 - 4:29 PM

Thanks everyone! And to my man all I can say is “ooh la la!” Love you Babe.

Kathy - December 20, 2012 - 3:21 AM

Nice pic! Thanks for the lesson, you make it sound so easy! Love the lights and the lighting of the Capitol

kathy Norwood - December 20, 2012 - 7:31 AM

Great tutorial! Love seeing the capital building and tree all lit up.

Fairly Candid - December 20, 2012 - 8:13 AM

Thanks Kathy! I imagine Texas has some pretty awesome decorations up around your state. They do everything BIG, don’t they? 🙂 This tree is absolutely the biggest tree I’ve ever seen and no kidding has a billion lights on it. They go up, down, around, sideways — I pity the poor soul(s) who has to take them down and untangle them because it will take them two months, no joke! Merry Christmas! Mary
